MAT-52506 Inverse Problems, fall 2008

Feedback and development

Modification of the course in fall 2008 (based on feedback from 2007)

The project work is kept and further developed, especially by clarifying the instructions and giving clearer intermediate deadlines.

I will write lecture notes.

Some not-so-central material will be removed (e.g. filtered backprojection), and the time so gained will be used for giving deeper theoretical background for the central material.

Feedback from fall 2007

The second realization of the course in fall 2007 was well received. Especially the project work was a good idea: students were highly motivated by it.

Number of students that passed the course: 16.

Several students complained about the scattered course material and the lack of a single source. The project work collected a lot of positive comments. Some students wished for deeper theoretical results and thought that the course is too easy.

Modification of the course in fall 2007 (based on feedback from 2006)

Overall, the first realization of this course in fall 2006 was quite successful.

In fall 2007 I skip some topics that are not central material (such as details of the inverse problem of ECG).
Moreover, I implement the following changes based on student feedback:

  • The statistical inversion part now assumes basic knowledge on probability and goes more directly to applications.
  • The list of prerequisites is now longer and more realistic.
  • A project work using Matlab is added (and part of the lectures are changed to interaction sessions about project works).
  • Because inverse problems is a new and rapidly developing field, there does no exist any single suitable course book.
However, all lecture material is available at the course website, as well as links to free resources on the Internet.

The applied and practical nature of the course is retained and strengthened.

    Written feedback:

  • The statistical inversion part concentrated too much on basics of probability and did not go enough into inverse problems. More examples of statistical inversion are needed.
  • The list of prerequisites was too short and optimistic. More realistic set of prerequisites should be given.
  • A project work using Matlab would be useful.
  • A single course book or material would be convenient.

There was a lot of positive feedback on the applied and practical nature of the course.
