MAT-52506 Inverse Problems, fall 2008

Project work page

The Inverse Problems course in fall 2008 is divided into two parts: lectures and exercises (Period I) and project work (Period II). This page contains instructions on how to prepare the project work.

The project work topics have been distributed in the last lecture. If you want to do a project work but do not yet have a topic, please contact the lecturer by email: .

Goal of the project work

The idea is to study an inverse problem both theoretically and computationally in teams of two students. The end product is a written report consisting of 10-20 pages. I recommend the classical table of contents for structuring the document:
1 Introduction
2 Materials and methods
3 Results
4 Discussion

Section 2 is for describing the data and the inversion methods used. In section 3 those methods are applied to the data and the results are reported with no interpretation; just facts and outcomes of computations are described. Section 4 is the place for discussing the results and drawing conclusions.

Schedule of the project work

The work is divided into two parts.

First deadline

At this point, two first sections should be preliminary written. More precisely, I want to see a document with sections
1 Introduction (written together, with general explanation of the project work topic and its relation to inverse problems)
2 Materials and methods (with explanation of simulation of data written by student A, and explanation of inversion method written by student B)
No computations need to be done at this point.

If you are working alone you can ignore the A/B division of labour above. Also, if your topic does not involve simulation of data, then please find some reasonable way to divide the work between students A and B.

Please reserve by email one of the following meeting times for a discussion with the lecturer about the draft of project work:
Tuesday Nov 4: 14:00-14:20 (Niemi)
Tuesday Nov 4: 14:20-14:40 (Free)
Tuesday Nov 4: 14:40-15:00 (Kauppi and Piirto)
Tuesday Nov 4: 15:20-15:40 (Free)
Tuesday Nov 4: 15:40-16:00 (Honkavirta and Pusa)
Tuesday Nov 4: 16:00-16:20 (Merlevede and Galbrun)
Wednesday Nov 5: 13:00-13:20 (Palmroth)
Wednesday Nov 5: 13:20-13:40 (Liuttu and Somppi)
Wednesday Nov 5: 16:00-16:20 (Mäki-Marttunen)
Wednesday Nov 5: 16:20-16:40 (Chladek)
Wednesday Nov 5: 16:40-17:00 (Migukin)
Wednesday Nov 5: 17:00-17:20 (Uzunov)
If all above times are unsuitable for your team, please send email to .

The draft of project work presented at the first deadline will be graded, and the grade represents 30% of the final grade of the project work.

Second (final) deadline

Please send the final project work at latest on Monday 8.12.2008 at 16:00. You can send the work electronically by email.

The final work should have all four sections completed:
1 Introduction
2 Materials and methods
3 Results (Data simulated by student B, and reconstructions computed by student A)
4 Discussion (Written together)

The final project work will be graded between 0 and 5, and the work done between the first and second deadlines makes up 70% of the grade.

How to get help during preparing the project work?

Course assistant Juho Linna is available for questions in hall SB204 Fridays from 12:15 to 14:00.

In case of problems that cannot be solved in the Friday question session or by email to the lecturer, please reserve a meeting time with the lecturer by email.
