About

Hypermedia Laboratory is a research, education and service unit at the Department of Mathematics at Tampere University of Technology (TUT). From its establishment in 1994, Hypermedia Laboratory has been working actively in the field of hypermedia in research, development and teaching.

Simply put, the term ‘hypermedia’ refers to modelling and organizing information and services so that the users, tasks and context are all appropriately taken into account. In addition, since developing and maintaining non-trivial services is expensive, the specifications and design must aim for efficient production and management. Typical applications of hypermedia include web-based services (for example, a social media site or electronic commerce), virtual learning environments, user-profiled documentation, and mobile information systems that exploit the ideas of, for example, recommendation systems.

The multidisciplinary research group here at Hypermedia Laboratory consists of experts on hypermedia, usability, mathematics, pedagogy, computer science and social sciences. All of our experts place strong emphasis on user-centred design and on the added value of Web-based solutions.
