Hypermedia Laboratory is responsible for teaching hypermedia at Tampere University of Technology. Hypermedia can be chosen as a major or a minor subject, as a part of our Information Technology program.

Our view of hypermedia is that it refers to modelling and organising information and services so that real users, their tasks and their usage context are appropriately acknowledged. Developing and maintaining non-trivial services is expensive, so we also aim for efficient production and management of our specifications and designs. Typical applications of hypermedia include ‘webisized’ access for legacy information services, user-profiled documentation and mobile information systems that exploit the ideas of, for example, recommendation systems.

Students can focus either on technical implementation of structured information or on general design and management of hypermedia projects. Our teachers of hypermedia are also active researchers in their particular fields.

Courses given by the Hypermedia Laboratory at TUT include:

  • Introduction to hypermedia (Hypermedian perusteet)
  • Accessibility (Saavutettavuus)
  • Web content production and design (Verkkopalvelun sisällöntuotanto)
  • Structured documents* (Rakenteiset dokumentit)
  • Usefulness of Web-based services (Verkkopalvelun käyttökelpoisuus ja arviointi)
  • Programming of hypermedia (Hypermedian ohjelmointi)
  • Management of hypermedia projects (Hypermedian tuotantoprojektin hallinnan erityispiirteet)
  • Advanced course on structured documents* (Rakenteisten dokumenttien jatkokurssi)
  • Hypermedia workshop (Hypermedian vaihtuva-aiheinen työpaja)
  • Qualitative Research Methods* (Kvalitatiiviset tutkimusmenetelmät)
  • Hypermedia, Special assignment (Hypermedian erikoistyö)
  • Project work in Hypermedia (Hypermedian projektityö)
  • Post-Graduate Seminar on Hypermedia* (Hypermedian jatko-opintoseminaari)

The Hypermedia Laboratory also offers post-graduate courses (marked with an asterisk (*) above) on current themes and organises further training in co-operation with companies and other educational organizations.

Note: Courses, by default, are taught in Finnish, but some include options for some level of instruction in English (e.g., assignments and exams). English-speaking students should contact the responsible teacher(s) for a particular course in advance. (See the list of courses in Finnish and the list of responsible teachers in Finnish.)
